Family isn’t always blood. It’s the people in your life who want you in theirs. The ones who accept you for who you are. The ones who would do anything to see your smile, and who love you no matter what.
When I began my life as a “real adult”, I was kind of a mess despite there being so many things in my life that were going well. I had a job before I turned the tassel on my graduation cap that hot morning in May of 2000. I had an apartment and, eventually, a car. I had all the material things that would define a successful person but I was unhappy. I was downright miserable.
I felt alone and isolated. I was confused. I didn’t have a full understanding of who I was. The part I did understand was something that I was having a hard time accepting. All of my sadness, confusion and self-hatred began to eat away at me. My soul and spirit were dying.
But then, these beautiful women flew into my life like a gang of super heroes. Their superpowers were the ability to support, encourage, comfort, accept and love.
In their own special way, these women helped a lost, damaged, confused girl become a happy, confident woman.
Over the course of the last sixteen years, I hope that I have shown my gratitude to these ladies. I don’t ever want them to doubt the incredible influence that they have been in my life so I wanted to make sure that I took the time to wish them a very Happy Mother’s Day!!
You can keep your Justice League. I’ll take these Super Moms over them any day.
